3-2-1 Groatmeal!

Here it is – the complete Groatmeal.

Prep time:  30 minutes

  • 3 c. boiling water
  • 1/3 c. shaved oats
  • 1 tbsp:
    • butter
    • brown sugar
    • roasted buckwheat tea (I get mine at Nijiya Japanese market in San Francisco but I think this or this will work well too).
  • 2 tbsp:

Milk or cream to taste.

Boil water. Put 1 1/3 cups boiling water into a small pot, stir in oatmeal. Simmer 25 minutes.

Put buckwheat into a tea strainer and add the remaining boiling water (about 1 2/3 cups) to make a cup of buckwheat tea.  Let this steep 20 minutes.  Remove buckwheat from tea and add the buckwheat to the oatmeal. Simmer five more minutes.

Put butter, brown sugar, craisins, chopped walnuts and milk (or cream) in bowl.  When the groatmeal is done, add it to the mix in the bowl and enjoy! The combination of flavors and textures is superb.

The Motels – Oakland, 1980

I never, ever expected to hear this again let alone SEE it. It was amazing when I was there in person and it’s still amazing.

Remember that this is the Oakland Auditorium – where the Warriors play – and it’s amazingly quiet for this perfect rendition of “Total Control”. The performance that The Motels put on that night really blew away the headliner (The Cars) who were technically proficient but dry, and with terrible sound.

Anyone who has been to see music at that venue knows that it’s easy for a band to sound terrible, but this night The Motels really had something special going on.

“Total Control” starts around 5:10.
